Meet the Directors 2019/2020

Peter Pan

Since he could move and talk Benjamin Hargreaves has been performing.  At the age of 9 he wrote, directed, designed the set, props and costumes and provided music for his first play 'Frosty and Friends', as his schools Christmas production. At age 10, with the help of his mother, he sought his own agent and landed a role as an extra in a local film. At the age of 14 he wrote, produced, directed and starred in his film adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer's Night Dream', titled 'One Crazy Night'. Throughout high school he moved around but was always active in his schools theatre or drama productions.

Benjamin joined the Saint Mary's University Drama Society in fall of 2018 and has starred in the fall 2018, and winter 2019 productions, and will be returning to the stage as an actor this September for 'Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe'.

Always a comedian, an entertainer, and someone with a strong passion for the creative arts, Benjamin leaves his mark wherever he goes and intends on doing so once again with his adaptation of 'Peter Pan'.  His adaptation will tell the classic tale, with some fun twists and an update to remove the problematic representations that existed in the original.

"I am so thrilled to be fulfilling a life goal to bring my vision of 'Peter Pan' to life on the stage and to share it with all of you! I look forward to everyone joining us on our journey to Neverland, and I hope everyone leaves believing in fairies."

Brona Higginbotham is the director of SMUDS fall production of William Shakespeare’s, 'The Tempest'. She has been involved in various forms of theatre since she was 9, and auditioned for her school’s production of Peter Pan, receiving the role of a pirate. I guess you could say she was “hooked”! Since then she has acted in various plays and musicals including 'A Ham-like Substitute' as Ophelia and 'The Night of January 16th' as Nancy Lee Faulkner, both produced by Saint Mary’s University Drama Society.

She has been stage crew for various productions, was stage manager for a production of Robin Hood, and last year I had my directing debut doing another play by the Bard, a SMUDS production of Twelfth Night. I’m absolutely thrilled to be back in my directing chair and working on another lovely story by such a wonderful playwright.

"I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to my family for helping me with all my directing pursuits, with a special shout-out to my mom, Karen Higginbotham and family friend Kristy Sanders for always helping me with last minute costuming needs! As well I would like to thank Katie Logan, Ben Hargreaves, Rachele Lasorsa, and Keisha Ryan for being incredible crew members and helps as well as incredible friends, and the lovely Ciara Harris for being the best and helping me in a million ways throughout the making of this production.

I hope you all enjoy the show!"

Nightfall, with Edgar Allan Poe

Mel Etiz holds a strong background in writing, directing and composing, having been involved in multiple short films and theatre productions.

She has also taken on the position of make-up director for two high-school musicals, written songs for live performance, choreographed one music video, and has acted in lead and supporting roles, including the role of Magda Svenson in SMUDS production of 'Night of January 16th',

"'Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe' is my first non-independent directorial project, and I am ecstatic to be bringing the world of Edgar Allan Poe to the SMUDS stage."
