Meet the 2019/2020 SMUDS Executive

Benjamin Hargreaves

Benjamin has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to do the best, as apparent in him operating his own small business at the age of 8. His past experience includes; being named 'President of the Year' as the leader of his community Leo Club, Vice President of his high school, catering the MLIS graduation brunch at Dalhousie, planning and designing the Yule Ball at Queens University, as well as planning and coordinating numerous other events and fundraisers. These experiences have lead him to take his Bachelor of Commerce at SMU.

Benjamin Hargreaves joined the Saint Mary''s University Drama Society in the fall of 2018, after a 13 year hiatus from acting and was awarded for his 'Outstanding Contributions to the Society' during the 2018/2019 season. Falling in love with the society, its members and the stage once again, Benjamin decided to take a more active role in the society and was named as the Vice President and Production Designer for the 2019/2020 season.  He will be starring as Edgar in SMUDS production of Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe, and will be writing and directing his adaptation of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan for the SMUDS winter 2020 production.

"I cannot wait to show everyone what we have in store for the society and our productions this year! I have been hard at work to elevate the level of professionalism and quality within our society and look forward to that taking shape. This year is a whole new SMUDS and I look forward to building new relationships with the hardworking and committed individuals within our society and to work once again with those who appreciate the hard work that I have put in and want to make this society something great and will make this year the societies best ever!"

Mary Jakeman is a third-year criminology student at Saint Mary’s University, and they have been involved in the performing arts their whole life, be it singing, acting, or dance.

They joined SMUDS in January of 2019 and have never looked back, becoming the Technical Director for Saint Mary’s University Drama Society's 2019/2020 season. They are also a cast member, having appeared as Homer Van Fleet in SMUDS production of 'Night of January 16th'.

"SMUDS has given me friends and family, it’s given me something to look forward to during the hardest parts of my life, and it’s been one of the best parts of my university experience."

Owen Benjamin

Owen is a third-year student at SMU who was cursed from a young age with a desire to be the most important yet least visible person possible, this has led him into the second year of his regime as the SMUDS marketing director.

In that time Owen has put his skills as a guy with Photoshop and too much free time to good use for SMUDS in producing effective and memorable marketing, Owen is a cog in a well-oiled theater machine that allows all who are a part of it to make the best of their experiences.

"This year is going to be one of the greats for SMUDS. This year’s executive and members, in general, are in a position to produce a variety of productions and workshops for the community with an amazing level of quality and polish and this is all possible due to the amount of time and effort that is being put in on multiple levels.

I can’t wait to see how people react to the rest of our projects this year 2019/2020 is going to be something truly exceptional for SMUDS that I am proud to be a part of and hope that everyone is able to get something out of."
